Using a Wire Jewelry Pattern Supply Kit

If you’re feeling the urge to make some wire jewelry and have never done it before, you’ll want your first project to be successful.  I know when I first started I went out and bought all sorts of beautiful things to make a necklace – just because the materials inspired me.  I spent quite a bit of money and the result was a lot less than what I’d hoped for.  Why?  I couldn’t craft what I had envisioned in my mind because I had no experience.

So, I recommend that you find a wire jewelry pattern kit with instructions to create your first piece.  With this success under your belt you’ll have the confidence to try out new things.  But, keep on learning, one piece at a time, adding in new materials / supplies and techniques you learn along the way.

Be sure to learn the terminology as well so that when you do read books or articles you understand what is being discussed.  Study how wire jewelry making supplies are used, such as the size and shape of wire – which specifications are best used for the jewelry you want to create.

Finally, stick with a plan on each piece after your first.  Taking a pile of leftovers and trying to make jewelry will probably not have the result you want.  It’s best to plan, purchase wire jewelry supplies, and then set aside the time to do it.  Why not stick with patterns and then do some modifications to them to learn more.

Take a class from a local expert or invest in your jewelry making hobby by purchasing a DVD or eBook on the subject – there are many!

The key however, is to have each creation be an enjoyable experience and not one of frustration.  This approach is important in any new hobby.  You can always buy a bunch of supplies to get started, but without a plan and pattern to follow you will probably be disappointed with the outcome!  Happy wire jewelry making!

Demystifying Switching Power Supplies

Demystifying Switching Power Supplies

$63.95

This book is a crash course in the fundamental theory, concepts, and terminology of switching power supplies. It is designed to quickly prepare engineers to make key decisions about power supplies for their projects. Intended for readers who need to quickly understand the key points of switching power supplies, this book covers the 20% of the topic that engineers use, 80% of the time. Unlike existing switching power supply books that deal strictly with design issues, this book also recognizes the growing importance of “off-the-shelf” commercial switching power supplies, giving readers the background necessary to select the right commercial supply. This book covers the core essentials of power supply theory and design while keeping mathematics to the absolute minimum necessary. Special attention is given to the selection of appropriate components, such as inductors and transformers, to ensure safe and reliable operation. Engineers, whose main design responsibilities are in other areas, will better understand the strengths and weaknesses of switching power supplies and whether such supplies are appropriate for their projects. They will be able to give more meaningful design requirements and specifications to those who design switching power supplies. * Discusses both AC line supplies and DC-DC inverters. * Covers the main switching power supply designs, including flyback, forward conversion, bridge, buch, boost, and boost/buck topologies. * Design examples include a 220 volt offline switching power supply and a 110 volt uninterruptible supply.

In the Making

In the Making

$25.45

From the first page to the last, from Thomas Kinkaid (really ) to Matthew Barney, this book serves as a launching pad. Conclusions are perpetually delayed. Resolutions are continually postponed. The text is written for takeoff, not arrival. It is a first step for readersi explorations of current modes of art making and for their own future artistic achievements. The much-anticipated follow-up to "Art on the Edge. . .and Over," Linda Weintraubis highly accessible introduction to contemporary art since the 1970s, "In the Making: Creative Options for Contemporary Art" explores essential but sometimes elusive facets of art making today. In her trademark writing style–straightforward and jargon-free–Weintraub sets out to itemize the conceptual and practical concerns that go into making contemporary art in all its endless permutations. In six clearly defined thematic sections–iScoping an Audience, i iSourcing Inspiration, i iCrafting an Artistic ‘Self, ‘i iExpressing an Artistic Attitude, i iChoosing a Mission, i and iMeasuring Successi–Weintraub moves artist by artist, in 40 individual chapters, using each to explain a different aspect of art making. Isaac Julien makes work for a highly specific audience; Michal Rovner communicates through metaphor and symbol; Charles Ray disrupts the viewer’s assumptions; Pipilotti Rist is inspired by female emotions; William Kentridge is moved by apartheid and redemption; Vanessa Beecroft epitomizes the biography of a smart, attractive, Caucasian woman; and Matthew Barney achieves success through resistance. Through a compelling combination of renowned and up-and-coming artists, Weintraub creates a complex understanding of how to make and look atcontemporary art–but in a simple, easily digestible format and language. In addition to being a fine read for anyone who simply wants to understand how to look at contemporary art, "In the Making" is also an exceptional pedagogical tool, one that addresses what is fast becoming a huge gap in art education. Teaching artistic techniques no longer provides young artists with a sufficient education–a full range of conceptual issues needs to be considered in any well-rounded studio practice. Yet these very same conceptual issues are often those that are dealt with textually in art history and criticism classes. Weintraub persuasively offers a series of texts that fit squarely into this gap, addressing issues that concern anyone who is learning how to make art or how to understand it. In addition, "In the Making" includes a series of interviews in which many of the artists discuss the practical issues of their life’s work. Conducted by Weintraub’s students at Oberlin College, the interviews pose questions about the artists’ schooling, their studio space, and how they support themselves if their main income doesn’t come from their art–the kind of questions every art student has always wanted to ask the artists whose work they see

Switching Power Supplies A to Z

Switching Power Supplies A to Z

$72.95

The design of Switching Power Supplies has become one of the most crucial aspects of power electronics, particularly in the explosive market for portable devices. Unfortunately, this seemingly simple mechanism is actually one of the most complex and under-estimated processes in Power Electronics. Switching power conversion involves several engineering disciplines: Semiconductor Physics, Thermal Management, Control Loop theory, Magnetics etc, and all these come into play eventually, in ways hard for non-experts to grasp. This book grows out of decades of the author’s experience designing commercial power supplies. Although his formal education was in physics, he learned the hard way what it took to succeed in designing power supplies for companies like Siemens and National Semiconductor. His passion for power supplies and his empathy for the practicing or aspiring power conversion engineer is evident on every page. * The most comprehensive study available of the theoretical and practical aspects of controlling and measuring Electromagnetic Interference in switching power supplies, including input filter instability considerations. * Step-by-step and iterative approach for calculating high-frequency losses in forward converter transformers, including Proximity losses based on Dowell’s equations. * Thorough, yet uniquely simple design flow-chart for building DC-DC converters and their magnetic components under typical wide-input supply conditions * Step-by-step, solved examples for stabilizing control loops of all three major topologies, using either transconductance or conventional operational amplifiers, and either current-mode or voltage-mode control.

Making Contracts Work

Making Contracts Work

$22.99

Until now, there has no book that sets out structures and strategies for sound supply contract management. This book sets out to do more than this: it aligns the science of sourcing and procuring of supplies/suppliers with the art of smart contract management. And it does so based on the author's sound knowledge of global markets and keen understanding of commercial deal-making, flanked with the legal pillars that maintain governance in an otherwise chaotic state of variation. What is also special about this book is that it recognises the challenges of mixing the science of procurement with the art of contract management and works out ways to blend the cultural divide. The book is set out in a structured way to allow managers of business areas or their own businesses to manage contracts from a holistic standpoint, understanding and planning the reasons for seeking a contract before the suppliers are selected and before negotiations take shape. Supply contract management is explained as a 4 stage process from plan – to – procure – to – manage – to – review so that all the layers of contract management can be peeled away to shape the best fit supply chain. This book shapes best practice on a global scale, and in a very real and pragmatic way, using examples and case studies for illustration. By doing so, it is both a guide, a business coach and a form of handbook for any manager – or indeed supplier – working in any part of the supply chain.

The Making of the Urban Landscape

The Making of the Urban Landscape

$53.95

Urban landscapes are an important part of the daily lives of most of the population of the western world. Buildings, streets, gardens and parks are a fundamental means by which we orientate ourselves within cities, and contribute significantly to our daily levels of efficiency and well-being (or lack of them). The creation and maintenance of the urban environment accounts for a sizeable proportion of public and private expenditure. Yet despite the controversy surrounding a few special places, the people and forces responsible for shaping ordinary town and city landscapes have rarely been systematically investigated and are poorly understood. By viewing urban landscapes in relation to the individuals and organizations responsible for their creation, this book supplies a crucial missing dimension to urban landscape history and a sharp insight into the dynamics of contemporary urban change.

Power Supplies for LED Driving

Power Supplies for LED Driving

$62.95

Light-emitting diodes are being widely used due to their efficient use of power. The applications for power LEDs include traffic lights, street lamps, automotive lighting, architectural lights, household light replacements, signage lighting (replacing neon strip lights and fluorescent tubes), and many more. Powering (driving) these LED’s is not always simple. Linear driving is inefficient and generates far too much heat. With a switching supply, the main issues are EMI and efficiency, and of course cost. The problem is to get a design that meets legal requirements and is efficient, while costing the least. This book covers the design trade-offs involved in LED driving applications, from low-power to UB-LEDs and beyond. * Practical, “hands-on” approach to power supply design for LED drivers; * Detailed examples of what works and why, throughout the design process; * Commentary on how the calculated component value compares with the actual value used, including a description of why the choice was made.

Making Sense of People

Making Sense of People

$25.99

This is the eBook version of the printed book. Leading neuroscientist Samuel Barondes shares scientific frameworks and tools for improving your intuitions about people, and sizing them up more consciously, systematically, and successfully. He shows how to use the latest research about personality and character to get along better, choose great friends, decide whom to trust, and avoid narcissists and sociopaths.   Kirkus Reviews A succinct look at personality psychology.   As a psychiatrist and neuroscientist at the University of California, Barondes ( Molecules and Mental Illness , 2007, etc.) has spent years studying human behavior, and this book reflects his systematic, scientific approach for personality assessment. The average person isn't likely to have time to research a difficult boss or potential love interest, but the author supplements intuition with a useful cornerstone for gauging human behavior: a table of the “Big Five” personality traits, among them Extraversion vs. Introversion and Agreeableness vs. Antagonism. To learn how to apply the Big Five, Barondes supplies a link for a professional online personality test, in addition to a basic introduction of troubling personality patterns—e.g., narcissism and compulsiveness. While genetics may play a heavy hand in influencing personality, Barondes writes, it's awareness of a person's background, character and life story that is paramount in unearthing reasons for adult behavior. Readers might like to see the author weave more everyday examples into the text—his exercise in fostering compassion by imagining an adult as a 10-year-old child is a gem—but there is plenty here to ponder.   Those looking for traditional “self-help” advice won't find it here, but this book clearly lays the groundwork for deeper human interaction and better life relationships.

Practical Computer Analysis of Switch Mode Power Supplies

$179.95

When designing switch-mode power supplies (SMPSs), engineers need much more than simple “recipes” for analysis. Such plug-and-go instructions are not at all helpful for simulating larger and more complex circuits and systems. Offering more than merely a “cookbook,” Practical Computer Analysis of Switch Mode Power Supplies provides a thorough understanding of the essential requirements for analyzing SMPS performance characteristics. It demonstrates the power of the circuit averaging technique when used with powerful computer circuit simulation programs. The book begins with SMPS fundamentals and the basics of circuit averaging models, reviewing most basic topologies and explaining all of their various modes of operation and control. The author then discusses the general analysis requirements of power supplies and how to develop the general types of SMPS models, demonstrating the use of SPICE for analysis. He examines the basic first-order analyses generally associated with SMPS performance along with more practical and detailed methods for developing SMPS and component models. The final chapter features the circuit-averaging macromodel of the integrated circuit PWM controller illustrated through analyses of three power supplies.Practical Computer Analysis of Switch Mode Power Supplies builds a strong foundation on the principles of SMPS analysis, enabling further development and advancement of the techniques while supplying meaningful insight into the process.

Studies in the Making of the Early Hebrew Book

Studies in the Making of the Early Hebrew Book

$208

"Studies in the Making of the Early Hebrew Book" is a collection of twenty-four essays on various aspects of Hebrew book production in the 16th through 18th centuries. The subject matter encompasses little known printing-presses, makers of Hebrew books, and book arts. The print-shops were in such locations as Padua, Freiburg-im-Breisgau, Verona, and the first presses in Livorno. Among the makers of Hebrew books are a peripatetic printer, a chief rabbi accused of plagiarism, a convert to Judaism, and a court Jew. Book arts address the titling of Hebrew books, dating by means of chronograms, printers' pressmarks, mirror-image monograms, and the development of the Talmudic page. The book is completed with miscellaneous but related articles on early Hebrew book sale catalogues, worker to book production ratio in an eighteenth century press, and an attempt to circumvent the Inquisition's ban on the printing of the Talmud in sixteenth Century Italy.

DIY Album Art: Paper Bags and Office Supplies

DIY Album Art: Paper Bags and Office Supplies

$27.48

In the mid-1990s a fresh, Do-It-Yourself approach to producing album art began to percolate through the post-punk, emo and hardcore music scenes in the US and Europe. The visual material that comprises DIY Album Art: Paper Bags & Office Supplies showcases a unique aesthetic and usage of materials borne out of financal necessity and creative imperatives. While a great number of the bands have not endured, their hand-made, screen-printed, glued, photocopied, drawn on, sewn together packaging paved the way for the potential of innovative, non-traditional music packaging. The obsourity of this material and its general coherence as an aesthetic ideology make for a rare revelatory book of work you have never seen before, although today much of it seems familiar. The reason for this is simple: the lasting power of these examples is found in major record label packaging being created today. But as DIY Album Art demonstrates, the essence of these packaging trends can nevar truly be replicated. The astounding range of no-budget packaging, along with stories behind the conception of the examples, will appeal to fans of music, cutting-edge design and anyone interested in anti-corporate sentiment.

Anne Enright, one of Ireland’s most remarkable writers, has just had two babies: a girl and a boy. Her new book, Making Babies , is the intimate, engaging, and very funny record of the journey from early pregnancy to age two. Written in dispatches, typed with a sleeping baby in the room, it has the rush of good news – full of the mess, the glory, and the raw shock of it all. An antidote to the high-minded, polemical ‘How-to’ baby manuals, Making Babies also bears a visceral and dreamlike witness to the first years of parenthood. Anne Enright wrote the truth of it as it happened, because, for these months and years, it is impossible for a woman to lie.

Reform in the Making: The Implementation of Social Policy in Prison

Reform in the Making: The Implementation of Social Policy in Prison

$33.44

Is it time to give up on rehabilitating criminals? Record numbers of Americans are going to prison, and most of them will eventually return to society with a high chance of becoming repeat offenders. But a decision to abandon rehabilitation programs now would be premature warns Ann Chih Lin, who finds that little attention has been given to how these programs are actually implemented and why they tend to fail. In Reform in the Making, she not only supplies much-needed information on the process of program implementation but she also considers its social context, the daily realities faced by prison staff and inmates. By offering an in-depth look at common rehabilitation programs currently in operation–education, job training, and drug treatment–and examining how they are used or misused, Lin offers a practical approach to understanding their high failure rate and how the situation could be improved. Based on extensive observation and over 350 interviews with staff and prisoners in five medium-security male prisons, the book contrasts successfully implemented programs with subverted, abandoned, or neglected programs (those which staff reject or which do not teach prisoners anything useful). Lin explains that staff and prisoners have little patience with programs aimed at long-range goals when they must face the ongoing, immediate challenge of surviving prison life. Finding incentives to make both sides participate fully in rehabilitation is among the book’s many contributions to improving prison policy.

In this “thought-provoking study” (Library Journal ), historian Kyle Ward—the widely acclaimed co-author of History Lessons—gives us another fascinating look at the biases inherent in the way we learn about our history. Juxtaposing passages from U.S. history textbooks from different eras, History in the Making provides us with intriguing new perspectives on familiar historical events and the ways in which they have been represented over time. The hardcover edition of History in the Making struck a chord among readers of popular history, and Ward was featured on NPR’s popular series “How the Understanding of U.S. History Changes.” “Interesting and useful,” according to Booklist, the book “convincingly illustrates how texts change as social and political attitudes evolve.”With excerpts that span two hundred years, from Columbus’s arrival to the Boston Massacre, from women’s suffrage to Japanese internment, History in the Making exposes the stark contrasts between the lessons different generations have been taught about our past. “A good starting point for anyone interested in history and subjectivity” (Kirkus), this immensely readable book is proof positive that your history is not your grandparent’s history and won’t be your children’s history.

Plans, performance, productivity, and pay are all linked to and often measured by time. Yet time is often taken for granted in daily life and the business world. The aim of this book is to bring time into sharper focus and in particular to look at the way time is constructed, made, managed, and used in organizations. The book both provides an overview of some of the key concepts in time — time's arrow, time's cycle, clock time, etc. — and it explores how particular features of the modern world — global time, futures, etc. — extend and change the temporal dimension of. organizational activity. Making Time emphasizes the richness of the temporal relations within organizations and the wealth of competing attempts to order and control time in the act of managing. It describes and explains this temporal complexity as it occurs in management, giving full recognition to the way that people create their own sense of time alongside the official temporal apparatus of the clock and diary. The contributors use a variety of management perspectives — strategy, organization theory,. decision making, industrial relations, and marketing — and deliberately place the experience of more traditional industrial settings alongside those at the forefront of the. 'new economy'. Making Time seeks to spark a debate across the field of management that does justice to the richness of the temporal features of contemporary organizations. The book will be vital reading for those who want to understand the complexities of time in organizations and the modern world, and the challenges it presents for the theoretical and practical spheres of management. – ;This book is a welcome sign of continued growth and vitality in the study of time … reading this book will be an eye-opening experience for those in management who cling to traditional assumptions concerning temporality. – KronoScope: Journal for the Study of Time;… original and provocative. – Work, employment and society

Alcohol Fuel: Making and Using Ethanol as a Renewable Fuel

Alcohol Fuel: Making and Using Ethanol as a Renewable Fuel

$31.76

Dwindling petroleum supplies and growing environmental concerns are significantly impacting the cost of petro-fuel and its infrastructure. The search for alternative fuel sources has led to ethanol, a gasoline substitute that is already in the marketplace as Gasohol and E-85. But large-scale production of corn-based ethanol is controversial as it threatens the world’s food supply. There are alternatives, however: Brazil uses sugar cane, which is up to six times more productive in energy conversion. After the energy crisis of the 1970s, there was a lot of misinformation about the cost of individual ethanol production. In order to achieve energy independence from gasoline, ethanol lends itself to small-scale production, and especially to cooperative ventures in rural communities, often using "waste" feedstock. "Alcohol Fuel" is a practical, grassroots book that will give readers all the information they need, covering every aspect of making and using ethanol for fuel, including: Permitting and planningBudgeting and setupSourcing feedstocksFinding and building distillation equipmentStorage and safetyPractical applications for converting motor vehicles, farm equipment, and space-heating systems The practical, user-friendly information on basic equipment needs, fermentation recipes, and distillation designs will be of interest to readers looking for information, as well as to those ready to make the switch. Richard Freudenberger was research director of "Mother Earth News," where he managed the Alcohol Fuel Program and developed solar and renewable solar and energy projects. He is publisher and technical editor of "BackHome" magazine and lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Making Waste

Making Waste

$27.95

Why was eighteenth-century English culture so fascinated with the things its society discarded? Why did Restoration and Augustan writers such as Milton, Dryden, Swift, and Pope describe, catalog, and memorialize the waste matter that their social and political worlds wanted to get rid of–from the theological dregs in Paradise Lost to the excrements in “The Lady’s Dressing Room” and the corpses of A Journal of the Plague Year? In Making Waste , the first book about refuse and its place in Enlightenment literature and culture, Sophie Gee examines the meaning of waste at the moment when the early modern world was turning modern. Gee explains how English writers used contemporary theological and philosophical texts about unwanted and leftover matter to explore secular, literary relationships between waste and value. She finds that, in the eighteenth century, waste was as culturally valuable as it was practically worthless–and that waste paradoxically revealed the things that the culture cherished most. The surprising central insight of Making Waste is that the creation of value always generates waste. Waste is therefore a sign–though a perverse one–that value and meaning have been made. Even when it appears to symbolize civic, economic, and political failure, waste is in fact restorative, a sign of cultural invigoration and imaginative abundance. Challenging the conventional association of Enlightenment culture with political and social improvement, and scientific and commercial progress, Making Waste has important insights for cultural and intellectual history as well as literary studies.

The essential tool kit to achieve breakthrough sales performance improvements . Numbers don’t lie: 40 percent of all salespeople miss their targets each year. How can sales managers ensure their teams are doing everything possible? The key lies in benchmarking, which is not new for finance or manufacturing but rarely gets applied to sales. Making the Number will teach executives to embrace data-driven decision making and rely less on gut instinct. Comparing a sales force to those of relevant peers leads to many opportunities to improve performance. The authors take readers through their five-step methodology for sales benchmarking, showing how to select metrics; gather, compute, and compare internal and external data; and then actually use the data. Making the Number includes case studies of sales benchmarking in action. For example, find out how Discover Financial Services plays David to the Goliaths of MasterCard and Visa. Whether you’re a sales rep, a manager, or a CEO, this book will show you a better way to make your number.

Making Love

$16.46

Robert Johansen’s and Todd Gaffaney’s breakout book, MAKING LOVE-How to Create, Enjoy, and Sustain Intimacy, is a beautifully written, easy to understand, clinically proven concept that teaches the reader how he or she can create and sustain love for their partner. MAKING LOVE is an extremely important book for today’s times, given that a staggering sixty-seven percent of couples married after 1990 are divorced. Ironically, marriage counselors divorce at the same alarming rate as the national average. While these failed relationship statistics are troubling, there is hope for a better tomorrow. Author’s Johansen and Gaffaney’s research evolved into a groundbreaking and clinically tested model that gives readers the tools to thrive in their marriage or relationship. Blurbs: "The authors have brought a refreshing and new perspective to the difficulties and complexities of the intimate relationship. Making Love offers a uniquely inspiring view on how partners can grow love for each other. I highly recommend it." Sherry Lewis, PhD. LCSW Drs. Johansen and Gaffaney have devised a very powerful model for effectively intervening in couples lives to improve their intimacy. Their model reduces strife while teaching relating partners intimacy-building communication techniques. This book will benefit professional therapists and lay people alike. Diana Haberland, M.A. Marriage and Family Therapist Private Practice I had the great opportunity to put the principles contained in this book to a scientific test for my doctoral dissertation. The results of my research were very positive to say the least. But perhaps even more importantly, I have applied these principles with clients in my practice and have seen first hand how effective they are. By offerring an organizing perspective on the complex data couples bring to therapy, the model reduces anxiety in clients and treating therapists. The model changes our traditional views on love and marriage. I strongly recommend it. Ian T. Johansen, PhD Clinical Psychologist Private Practice Author, Private Practice

Making Meaning

Making Meaning

$19.99

This is the eBook version of the printed book. “ We’re now hip-deep, if not drowning, in the ‘experience economy.‘ Here‘s the smartest book I‘ve read so far that can actually help get your brand to higher ground, fast. And it‘s written by people who not only drew the map, but blazed these trails in the first place.” –Brian Collins, Executive Creative Director, Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide Brand Integration Group In a market economy characterized by commoditized products and global competition, how do companies gain deep and lasting loyalty from their customers? The key, this book argues, is in providing meaningful customer experiences. Writing in the tradition of Louis Cheskin, one of the founding fathers of market research, the authors of Making Meaning observe, define, and describe the meaningful customer experience. By consciously evoking certain deeply valued meanings through their products, services, and multidimensional customer experiences, they argue, companies can create more value and achieve lasting strategic advantages over their competitors. A few businesses are already discovering this approach, but until now no one has articulated it in such a persuasive and practical way. Making Meaning not only encourages businesses to adopt an innovation process that’s centered on meaning, it also tells you how. The book outlines a plan of action and describes the attributes of a meaning-centric innovation team. With insightful real-world examples drawn from the Cheskin company's experience and from the authors' observations of the contemporary global market, this book outlines a plan of action and describes the attributes of a meaning-centric innovation team. Meaningful experiences—as distinct from trivial ones—reinforce or transform the customer’s sense of purpose and significance. The authors’ vision of a world of meaningful consumption is idealistic, but don’t be fooled: this is a straightforward business book with an eye on the ROI. It shows how to bring R&D, design, and marketing together to create  deeper and richer experiences for your customers.  Making Meaning: How Successful Businesses Deliver Meaningful Customer Experiences is an engaging and practical book for business leaders, explaining how their companies can create more meaningful products and services to better achieve their goals.

Like no other available volume, the book explores the dark heart within HarrisÕs novelsÑthe unflinching look at evil that makes them so much more than just Ògood reads.Ó Making Murder looks at all five of HarrisÕs novels, starting with the suspenseful terrorist thriller, Black Sunday, then moving through the quartet of books in which Hannibal Lecter gradually moves from malevolent presiding spirit to unsettling, recognizably human protagonist. Author Philip Simpson looks at the critical response each book received and explores the works themselves in terms of story, characters, writing style, allusions and symbols, and themes. An introductory chapter provides insights into the authorÕs life, publishing history, and significant cultural impact.

Artful Making

Artful Making

$19.96

Artful Making offers the first proven, research-based framework for engineering ingenuity and innovation. This book is the result of a multi-year collaboration between Harvard Business School professor Robert Austin and leading theatre director and playwright Lee Devin. Together, they demonstrate striking structural similarities between theatre artistry and production and today’s business projects–and show how collaborative artists have mastered the art of delivering innovation ‘on cue,’ on immovable deadlines and budgets. These methods are neither mysterious nor flaky: they are rigorous, precise, and–with this book’s help–absolutely learnable and reproducible. They rely on cheap and rapid iteration rather than on intensive up-front planning, and with the help of today’s enabling technologies, they can be applied in virtually any environment with knowledge-based outputs. Moreover, they provide an overarching framework for leveraging the full benefits of today’s leading techniques for promoting flexibility and innovation, from agile development to real options.

“What kind of person do I want my child to be?” There are hundreds of books that give parents advice on everything from weaning to toilet training, from discipline to nutrition. But in spite of this overwhelming amount of information, there is very little research-based advice for parents on how to raise their children to be well rounded and achieve their full potential, helping them learn to take on life’s challenges, communicate well with others, and remain committed to learning. These are the “essential life skills” that Ellen Galinsky has spent her career pursuing, through her own studies and through decades of talking with more than a hundred of the most outstanding researchers in child development and neuroscience. The good news is that there are simple everyday things that all parents can do to build these skills in their children for today and for the future. They don’t cost money, and it’s never too late to begin. In Mind in the Making , Ellen Galinsky has grouped this research into seven critical areas that children need most: (1) focus and self control; (2) perspective taking; (3) communicating; (4) making connections; (5) critical thinking; (6) taking on challenges; and (7) self-directed, engaged learning. For each of these skills, Galinsky shows parents what the studies have proven, and she provides numerous concrete things that parents can do—starting today—to strengthen these skills in their children. These aren’t the kinds of skills that children just pick up; these skills have to be fostered. They are the skills that give children the ability to focus on their goals so that they can learn more easily and communicate what they’ve learned. These are the skills that prepare children for the pressures of modern life, skills that they will draw on now and for years to come. Mind in the Making is a truly groundbreaking book, one that teaches parents how to give children the most important tools they will need. Already acclaimed by such thought leaders as T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., David A. Hamburg, M.D., Adele Faber, and Judy Woodruff, Mind in the Making is destined to become a classic in the literature of parenting.

Making Heretics

Making Heretics

$52.5

Making Heretics is a major new narrative of the famous Massachusetts disputes of the late 1630s misleadingly labeled the “antinomian controversy” by later historians. Drawing on an unprecedented range of sources, Michael Winship fundamentally recasts these interlocked religious and political struggles as a complex ongoing interaction of personalities and personal agendas and as a succession of short-term events with cumulative results. Previously neglected figures like Sir Henry Vane and John Wheelwright assume leading roles in the processes that nearly ended Massachusetts, while more familiar “hot Protestants” like John Cotton and Anne Hutchinson are relocated in larger frameworks. The book features a striking portrayal of the minister Thomas Shepard as an angry heresy-hunting militant, helping to set the volatile terms on which the disputes were conducted and keeping the flames of contention stoked even as he ostensibly attempted to quell them. The first book-length treatment in forty years, Making Heretics locates its story in rich contexts, ranging from ministerial quarrels and negotiations over fine but bitterly contested theological points to the shadowy worlds of orthodox and unorthodox lay piety, and from the transatlantic struggles over the Massachusetts Bay Company’s charter to the fraught apocalyptic geopolitics of the Reformation itself. An object study in the ways that puritanism generated, managed, and failed to manage diversity, Making Heretics carries its account on into England in the 1640s and 1650s and helps explain the differing fortunes of puritanism in the Old and New Worlds.

The transition from primary to secondary school is a time of great anxiety for most children. For children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) this anxiety can be overwhelming. Fear of the unknown, difficulty coping with monumental changes and the inability to imagine a favourable outcome, can all combine to make this unavoidable step in school life a time of great fear and dread. This book provides guidance for schools and parents on how to make the transfer from primary to secondary as easy as possible for children with ASDs. The book advocates the need for scrupulous preparation of transfer arrangements because children with ASDs struggle to predict the outcome of any new situation. No matter how much discussion has taken place, it is only when the situation has been experienced first hand that they will have a real understanding of it and be able to build up a 'real life memory bank' (RLMB). The authors' advice aims to ensure that any preparations lead to a favourable outcome, in order to build a positive RLMB. The book outlines term by term preparation in the final years of primary school and includes photocopiable resources and a Moving to Secondary School" booklet. As most children with ASDs are visual learners and think in pictures, the booklet uses symbols to aid understanding. Making the Move provides a wealth of effective strategies and resources that will encourage and inspire greater confidence for pupils with ASDs, parents and schools. "

For me I think James Harvey Robinson Is going to be almost as important as was Huxley in my adolescence and William James In later years. He takes much that was latent and crude In my mind and gives it texture and form andconfidence and the spirit of the school he has organized liberates something of my private dreams into the world of reality. Some of the faults of this volume may be due to the desultory manner in which it has been composed but, on the other hand, the length of time that has elapsed since It yas first planned has given me opportunity for more careful consideration of difficult poimts, i I The object of the book is tohgivelto educated readers unversed in philology some notion of the causes that have produced the excellences and defects of modern English as an instrument of expression. With the history of the language I have attempted to deal only so far as it bears on this special problem. The subject, even as thus restricted, is one which it is not easy to treat briefly. I have, however, resisted the temptation to enlarge the volume beyond the limits originally intended, because I believe that for the purpose which I have in view a small book is more likely to be useful than a large one. Making Comics

Scott McCloud tore down the wall between high and low culture in 1993 with Understanding Comics, a massive comic book about comics, linking the medium to such diverse fields as media theory, movie criticism, and web design. In Reinventing Comics, McCloud took this to the next level, charting twelve different revolutions in how comics are generated, read, and perceived today. Now, in Making Comics, McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a character’s facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.) And he does all of it in his inimitable voice and through his cartoon stand–in narrator, mixing dry humor and legitimate instruction. McCloud shows his reader how to master the human condition through word and image in a brilliantly minimalistic way. Comic book devotees as well as the most uninitiated will marvel at this journey into a once–underappreciated art form.

Womanhood in the Making

In this book, Mary Hancock challenges readers to rethink the notions of tradition and modernity that have figured centrally in anthropological discussions of social change in South Asia. She shows tradition and modernity to be categories created, deployed, and objectified by Tamil Brahmans as they produce their own class, gender, national, and sectarian identities. This highly original ethnographic analysis of Brahman women’s ritualized practice demonstrates how tradition and modernity-and the shifting boundaries between them-are explicitly and implicitly produced and reworked on the body of the ideal, auspicious married woman. Through case studies of women’s religious practices, the book reveals how female subjectivities are invented and reworked through ritually mediated relations among women and between women and the powerful goddesses to whom they are devoted. Womanhood in the Making: Domestic Ritual and Public Culture in Urban South India asks readers to rethink not only their images of Hindu women, but also the history of anthropological study of India. Hancock shows how anthropological categories of analysis are produced and deployed by both ethnographers and their informants in cultural brokerage, in elite nationalisms, and in Milton Singer’s foundational study of social change in South Asia. Provocative and engaging, this work will interest scholars and students of anthropology, history, cultural studies, women’s studies, and religion.

Mark Sundeen needed to stage a comeback. His first book was little read, rarely reviewed, and his book tour was cancelled. So when a careless big city publisher calls with an offer for a book about bullfighting, Mark assumes this is his best and last chance to follow the trajectory of his literary heroes. To be sure, Sundeen has never been to a bullfight. He doesn’t speak Spanish. He’s not even a particularly good reporter. Come to think of it, he’s probably one of the least qualified people to write a book about bullfighting, even in the best of circumstances. But that doesn’t stop Mark Sundeen. After squandering most of the book advance on back rent and debts, Sundeen can’t afford a trip to Spain, so he settles for nearby Mexico. But the bullfighting he finds south of the border is tawdry and comical, and people seem much more interested in the concessions and sideshows. There’s little of the passion and artistry and bravery that he’d hoped to employ in exhibiting his literary genius to the masses. To compensate for his own shortcomings as an author, Sundeen invents an alter ego, Travis LaFrance, a swashbuckling adventure writer, in the tradition of his idol, Ernest Hemingway. But as his research falters, his money runs out, and the deadline approaches, Sundeen’s high-minded fantasies are skewered by his second-rate reality. Eventually, Travis LaFrance steps in to take control, and our narrator goes blundering through the landscape of his own dreams and delusions, propelled solely by a preposterous, quixotic, and ultimately heartbreaking insistence that his own life story, no matter how crummy, is worth being told in the pages of Great Literature. The Making of Toro is a unique comic classic, a hilarious poke in the ribs of self-important “literary memoirs,” and also a sly, poignant tale of the hazards of trying too hard to turn real life into high art.

What do adolescents care about? Chatting on-line with friends, movies, their favorite bands . . . but many are also avid readers. What motivates some of these "typical teens" to become lifelong readers and others to slide by with the minimum amount of assigned reading? Teri Lesesne says the key is finding the books that get them hooked in the first place. In "Making the Match" she focuses on three distinct areas that will assist teachers and librarians in steering students to the literature they love: Knowing the readers: discussion of important theories in the development of adolescents (mentally, physically, morally, socially) and how that information helps educators to reach these kids with books. This background information is brought home through the book’s "snapshots" which profile many of the adolescents the author has worked with. Knowing the books: examination of the various forms, formats, and genres that YA literature has to offer, as well as what special challenges educators face when selecting quality nonfiction or realistic fiction, and the role picture books can play in this process.Knowing the strategies: an overview of concrete ideas for motivating students to read as well as follow-up activities for post-reading assessment. Strategies discussed include reading aloud, booktalking, alternatives to traditional book reports, and literature circles. A delightful feature of the book that will help inspire teachers and students alike–as well as underscore the concepts contained in the text–is a series of vignettes by popular, award-winning YA authors that offer glimpses into their own feelings and memories of books and reading. Authors include: Sharon Creech, Jack Gantos, Chris Crutcher, Mel Glenn, Paul Janeczko, and others. The book concludes with an invaluable set of appendices providing an FAQ on YA literature, bibliographies of professional materials, books by the vignette authors, and over twenty booklists with hundreds of books organized by genre or topic, all with suggested grade levels.

Making Volunteers

Making Volunteers

$39.5

Volunteering improves inner character, builds community, cures poverty, and prevents crime. We’ve all heard this kind of empowerment talk from nonprofit and government-sponsored civic programs. But what do these programs really accomplish? In Making Volunteers , Nina Eliasoph offers an in-depth, humorous, wrenching, and at times uplifting look inside youth and adult civic programs. She reveals an urgent need for policy reforms in order to improve these organizations and shows that while volunteers learn important lessons, they are not always the lessons that empowerment programs aim to teach. With short-term funding and a dizzy mix of mandates from multiple sponsors, community programs develop a complex web of intimacy, governance, and civic life. Eliasoph describes the at-risk youth served by such programs, the college-bound volunteers who hope to feel selfless inspiration and plump up their resumés, and what happens when the two groups are expected to bond instantly through short-term projects. She looks at adult “plug-in” volunteers who, working in after-school programs and limited by time, hope to become like beloved aunties to youth. Eliasoph indicates that adult volunteers can provide grassroots support but they can also undermine the family-like warmth created by paid organizers. Exploring contradictions between the democratic rhetoric of empowerment programs and the bureaucratic hurdles that volunteers learn to navigate, the book demonstrates that empowerment projects work best with less precarious funding, more careful planning, and mandatory training, reflection, and long-term commitments from volunteers. Based on participant research inside civic and community organizations, Making Volunteers illustrates what these programs can and cannot achieve, and how to make them more effective.

The Making of Chicana/o Studies traces the philosophy and historical development of the field of Chicana/o studies from precursor movements to the Civil Rights era to today, focusing its lens on the political machinations in higher education that sought to destroy the discipline. As a renowned leader, activist, scholar, and founding member of the movement to establish this curriculum in the California State University system, which serves as a model for the rest of the country, Rodolfo F. Acuna has, for more than forty years, battled the trend in academia to deprive this group of its academic presence. The book assesses the development of Chicana/o studies (an area of studies that has even more value today than at its inception)–myths about its epistemological foundations have remained uncontested. Acuna sets the record straight, challenging those in the academy who would fold the discipline into Latino studies, shadow it under the dubious umbrella of ethnic studies, or eliminate it altogether. Building the largest Chicana/o studies program in the nation was no easy feat, especially in an atmosphere of academic contention. In this remarkable account, Acuna reveals how California State University, Northridge, was instrumental in developing an area of study that offers more than 166 sections per semester, taught by 26 tenured and 45 part-time instructors. He provides vignettes of successful programs across the country and offers contemporary educators and students a game plan–the mechanics for creating a successful Chicana/o studies discipline–and a comprehensive index of current Chicana/o studies programs nationwide. Latinas/os, of which Mexican Americans are nearly seventy percent, comprise a complex sector of society projected to be just shy of thirty percent of the nation’s population by 2050. The Making of Chicana/o Studies identifies what went wrong in the history of Chicana/o studies and offers tangible solutions for the future.

Making Israel

Benny Morris is the founding father of the New Historians, a group of Israeli scholars who have challenged long-established perceptions about the origins of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Their research rigorously documented crimes and atrocities committed by the Israeli armed forces, including rape, torture, and ethnic cleansing. With "Making Israel," Morris brings together the first collection of translated articles on the New History by leading Zionist and revisionist Israeli historians, providing Americans with a firsthand view of this important debate and enabling a better understanding of how the New Historians have influenced Israelis’ awareness of their own past. "The study of Israeli history, society, politics, and economics over the past two decades has been marked by a fierce and sometimes highly personal debate between ‘traditionalists’—scholars who generally interpreted Israeli history and society within the Zionist ethos—and ‘revisionists’—scholars who challenged conventional Zionist narratives of Israeli history and society. "Making Israel" brings together traditionalists and revisionists who openly and directly lay out their key insights about Israel’s origins. It also introduces multidisciplinary perspectives on Israel by historians and sociologists, each bringing into the debate its own jargon, its own epistemology and methodology, and its own array of substantive issues. This is essential reading for anybody who wants to understand the different interpretations of Israeli society and perhaps the central debate among students of modern Israel." —Zeev Maoz, Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Davis, and Distinguished Fellow at the Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya "Israel’s ‘new historians’ have done a great service to their country, and to all who care about the Arab-Israeli conflict. By challenging myths, reexamining evidence, and asking truly important questions about the past they help to confront the present with honesty and realism. This book provides a sampling of the best of what these courageous voices have to offer." —William B. Quandt, University of Virginia Benny Morris is Professor of Middle East history at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba, Israel, and is the author of "Righteous Victims: A History of the Zionist-Arab Conflict, 1881-1999."

Making Russians

Making Russians

$134.4

Making Russians is an innovative study dealing with Russian nationalities policy in Lithuania and Belarus in the aftermath of the 1863 Uprising. The book devotes most attention to imperial confessional and language policy, for in Russian discourse at that time it was religion and language that were considered to be the most important criteria determining nationality. The account of Russian nationalities policy presented here differs considerably from the assessments usually offered by historians from east-central Europe primarily because the author provides a more subtle description of the aims of imperial nationalities policy, rejecting the claim that the Russian authorities consistently sought to assimilate members of other national groups. At the same time the interpretation this study offers opens a discussion with western and Russian historians, especially those, who lay heavy emphasis on discourse analysis. This study asserts that the rhetoric of officials and certain public campaigners was influenced by a concept of political correctness, which condemned all forms of ethnic denationalisation. A closer look at the implementation of discriminatory policy allows us to discern within Russian imperial policy more attempts to assimilate or otherwise repress the cultures of non-dominant national groups than it is possible to appreciate simply by analysing discourse alone.

Making IT Count

$60.95

‘Making IT Count: from strategy to implementation’ focuses on the practical elements of delivering Information Technology strategy. Studies regularly show that over half of Information Technology strategies are never implemented, or are unsuccessful in delivering the desired results, and that a significant percentage of strategies implemented were never in the original plans. The linkage between strategy development and delivery needs a very clear focus; this is the key topic that the authors address. The book highlights eight major fallacies in managing IT, and eighteen better practices. It then details how to draw up strategy, instigate navigation techniques and make sourcing decisions. Change and delivery are a major focus, as is infrastructure development. Caselets and full length case studies of organizations such as General Electric, Siemens, Colonial Mutual, Charles Schwab, Macquarie Bank, ICI, United Airlines, Norwich Union, Walgreens and Dell and have been included to show how strategies have been successfully implemented and managed. Shows practitioners how to actually carry out, develop and implement an Information Technology strategy Contains “caselets” and full case studies of recent successful implementations of Information Technology strategies by organizationsAuthors combine a wealth of experience and expertise to provide practical guidance to professionals

Making the Grade

Making the Grade

$44

A significant factor for many people deciding where to live is the quality of the local school district, with superior schools creating a price premium for housing. The result is a “race to the top,” as all school districts attempt to improve their performance in order to attract homebuyers. Given the importance of school districts to the daily lives of children and families, it is surprising that their evolution has not received much attention.   In this provocative book, William Fischel argues that the historical development of school districts reflects Americans’ desire to make their communities attractive to outsiders. The result has been a standardized, interchangeable system of education not overly demanding for either students or teachers, one that involved parents and local voters in its governance and finance. Innovative in its focus on bottom-up processes generated by individual behaviors rather than top-down decisions by bureaucrats, Making the Grade provides a new perspective on education reform that emphasizes how public schools form the basis for the localized social capital in American towns and cities.

Making Strange

Making Strange

$56

This compact, indispensable overview answers a vexed question: Why do so many works of modern and postmodern literature and art seem designed to appear ‘strange’, and how can they still cause pleasure in the beholder? To help overcome the initial barrier caused by this ‘strangeness’, the general reader is given an initial, non-technical description of the ‘aesthetic of the strange’ as it is experienced in the reading or viewing process. There follows a broad survey of modern and postmodern trends, illustrating their staggering variety and making plain the manifold methods and strategies adopted by writers and artists to ‘make it strange’. The book closes with a systematic summary of the theoretical underpinnings of the ‘aesthetic of the strange’, focussing on the ways in which it differs from both the earlier ‘aesthetic of the beautiful’ and the ‘aesthetic of the sublime’. It is made amply clear that the strangeness characteristic of modern and postmodern art has ushered in an entirely new, ‘third’ kind of aesthetic – one that has undergone further transformation over the past two decades. Beyond its usefulness as a practical introduction to the ‘aesthetic of the strange’, the present study also takes up the most recent, cutting-edge aspects of scholarly debate, while initiates are offered an original approach to the theoretical implications of this seminal phenomenon.

Making a Voice

Making a Voice

Since apartheid’s dissolution in the early 1990s and its formal abolishment in April 1994, there has been increasing interest in the early history of African struggles against segregation and apartheid. This book focuses on the resistance to segregation in the eastern cape town of Port Elizabeth, long known for its tradition of political protest. Joyce Kirk presents a detailed study of men and women in South Africa as they sought to create their own space and voice within the emerging urban areas of nineteenth and early twentieth-century South Africa. In Making a Voice, Kirk explores the roots of the tradition of resistance among members of the emergent African working and middle class who were, much earlier than previously realized, living permanently in the growing urban areas. Kirk also examines the changing ideological, economic, and political forces that influenced the colonial government to pursue legislation aimed at depriving Africans of land, housing, and property in the towns, as well as political rights and freedom of movement. Finally, Kirk identifies the ways Africans challenged the government’s attempt to use public-health laws to impose residential segregation, the factors that undermined the largely political alliance between whites and blacks in the Cape colony, and the role African women played in challenging racial segregation.

Making of the Mosaic

Immigration policy has always been and continues to be a subject of intense political and public debate. This book examines the ideas, interests, institutions, and rhetoric that have shaped Canada’s immigration history. Beginning in the pre-Confederation period, the authors tell of the dramatic transformations that have characterized our attitudes towards immigrants. While, at first, few obstacles were placed in the way of newcomers to Canada, the turn of the century brought policies of increasing selectivity. The massive deportations of the First World War and Depression eras were exceeded in harshness only by the tactics implemented during World War II, when nearly the entire Canadian population of Japanese descent was incarcerated, and when Jewish refugees fleeing from mass extermination abroad were turned away from our shores. Bringing us right up to date with the more expansionary policies of the 1990s, the authors clarify the central issues and attitudes underlying each phase and juno tune of policy decision. Their thoughtful study reveals a set of core normative and ethical values that have been fundamental in the making of the Canadian mosaic.

Making Haye

Making Haye

$31.5

MAKING HAYE is the authorised account of David Haye's ascent from amateur prodigy to WBA world heavyweight champion, as told by one of the few confidants the boxer kept close by his side along the way. Elliot Worsell was just 17 the night he first met and interviewed Haye and, little did either know at the time, the pair's impromptu meeting at Bethnal Green's historic York Hall would be the start of an eight-year relationship that allowed Worsell closer to Haye than any other reporter or insider. Worsell charts the Bermondsey boy's meteoric rise from world amateur silver medallist to world professional champion of both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. After an early career loss, the one-time playboy and slacker rededicated himself to his profession and went on a run that saw Haye capture European and world titles as a cruiserweight and then, in November 2009, conquer seven-foot Russian giant Nikolay Valuev to snatch the WBA world heavyweight crown. The victory launched Haye into a new bracket of popularity and fame – two back-to-back nominations for BBC Sports Personality of the Year followed, signifying his sudden leap into the mainstream. Worsell stayed alongside Haye through both the good times and the bad, and it was this loyalty that ultimately unlocked doors that others found slammed shut. The author was not only reporting on Haye's fights from ringside, but also spending extensive and revealing time with the boxer in training camp. Subsequently, Worsell has witnessed a side of the champion ordinarily shielded from the public at large. Worsell was routinely the only man allowed close to the fighter in the precious hours before battle. Additionally, though a journalist by trade, such was the level of trust that Worsell became a source of strategic advice and support in the preparatory stages of world title fights. Worsell has been privy to Haye’s plans, insecurities and fears that no other sportswriter knew existed, and uses this insight as the basis for MAKING HAYE, the first and only book on Haye's career, private life and mind. Having grown alongside one another in the same sport – albeit in entirely different roles – Elliot Worsell is the ideal man to chart David Haye's rise and, typically for both of them, no stone is left unturned and no truth is kept hidden.

The Making of Cabaret

The Making of Cabaret

$25.35

Condensing a wide variety of sources into a handy and engaging chronicle, this book is the most detailed production history to date of the original Broadway version of Cabaret, showing primarily how the show evolved from Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin stories (especially the Sally Bowles novella), into John van Druten’s stage play, a British film adaptation, and then the Broadway musical, conceived and directed by Harold Prince as an early concept musical or meta-musical. The book shows how Prince was able to find his central metaphor that was appropriate to Weimar society and to America in the Sixties as well. It places this cabaret metaphor within a contextual history of European cabaret. Tracing the gradual evolution of Joe Masteroff’s libretto (through three versions), the book analyzes the musical’s main metaphor, structure, music and lyrics (John Kander and Fred Ebb), design (sets by Boris Aronson, lighting by Jean Rosenthal, costumes (by Patricia Zipprodt), choreography (Ron Field), casting, and rehearsals, arguing that though the original version was limited by social and political mores of its day, it set a new standard and path for the American musical, drawing attention to its own theatrical artifice (including camp). The book ends with an examination of the first London version (1968), Bob Fosse’s 1972 film version, Hal Prince’s 1987 Broadway remount, Sam Mendes’s stunning 1998 production, Rufus Norris’s London re-imagining (2006), and Amanda Dehnert’s new investigation for the Stratford Festival of Canada (2006), and speculates on what the future holds for this musical. The book contains nearly 40 illustrations, full cast credits, and a bibliography.

A crucial element of eventing is that horse and rider complete the cross-country course within a set time (‘the optimum time’). If the competitor takes longer, significant penalty points are awarded against him or her. Many eventers try to achieve the optimum time by taking unnecessary risks, which, as Stuart Tinney explains, can be avoided if the correct training is carried out. Stuart Tinney, an Olympic gold medallist, completed the Sydney Olympic course easily within the optimum time, not through uncontrollable speed but through accurate and controlled riding. This skill and the associated training and horse management are explained and demonstrated in the book, including:. · Equipment for the horse and rider. · Walking the course. · Riding cross country safely and efficiently. · Training for cross country in the arena. · Horse fitness and management. · Horse types. This book will therefore be of interest to all eventers from introductory to advanced level. Photograph of Stuart Tinney riding Calvin at Berrima by Max Wilson: agenda photography

Making the Transition

Making the Transition

$60

After the breakdown of socialism in Central and Eastern Europe, the role of education systems in preparing students for the “real world” changed. Though young people were freed from coercive state institutions, the shift to capitalism made the transition from school to work much more precarious and increased inequality in early career outcomes. This volume provides the first large-scale analysis of the impact social transformation has had on young people in their transition from school to work in Central and Eastern European countries. Written by local experts, the book examines the process for those entering the workforce under socialism, during the turbulent transformation years, in the early 2000s, and today. It considers both the risks and opportunities that have emerged, and reveals how they are distributed across social groups. Only by studying these changes can we better understand the long-term impact of socialism and post-socialist transformation on the problems young people in this part of the world are facing today.

Syntax in the Making

Syntax in the Making

$149

Research on the interplay between language structure and language use has shown that grammar is shaped, maintained, and modified by language use. In this view, then, grammar is not seen as existing apart from language use, but rather as a set of recurrent, grammaticized patterns of discourse. This book focuses on syntactic structuring in Finnish from the viewpoint of language use. The author sets out to study syntactic structures in their local contexts in order to discover the more global patterns and constraints on the use of these structures. The coding strategies point to the clause core as the locus of syntactic structuring: this is where syntactic relations emerge most clearly. It is shown that the key to understanding the coding of the core syntactic relations is the category of person. The clause core also shows strong intonational unity as it is most often presented in one intonation unit. Furthermore, analysis of spoken discourse shows the robustness of the category of noun phrase, both as a clausal constituent and as a free syntactic unit, the free NP.

HEZEKIAH GRUMBLES. "DEFORE Mr. Thirlmore was through with his break- fast he was told that some one was waiting to see him. It was Maggie who made the announcement. Many years before Maggie had been imported from the Isle of Man as an inseparable member of a flock of sheep which she had herded all her life. Maggie was almost as broad as she was long, her hair cut short into a mop of sunburned tow about her head. Hers was a square face of animal honesty; and she had such a droop of the head, such a forward thrust of the muscular shoulders, such an amble of gait, as to resemble, with the hair hanging about her patient eyes, not a Shetland pony merely, but one which has long tugged at the drawing of a well-loaded van. "Is it a man or a woman who wants to see me?" demanded her master. Maggie’s sleeves were rolled up tight to her shoulders when the knock came at the door; she had time to unroll but one before answering it. " It is a man, sir," she now replied, tugging to draw down her other sleeve over an arm which was purple from the wash-tub. " And not a gentleman? Then I ‘ll see him." slaggie glanced from her mistress to her master. " It is a mon who is a gentlemen," she said in her dogged fashion. "Then I won’t see him. Tell him so. I am too busy." Mr. Thirlmore took another egg; but Maggie lingered, held by the eye of her mistress. " I had hoped people would let me alone," the master of the house growled over his plate like a dog over his bone. " Why should anybody want to see me? I don’t want to see anybody." " It may be one of your old members from the city. You have devoted friends there, Theodore." " Do you think so ? " His wife was venturing upon a topic of which he was evidently tired. Many claims are made about how certain tools, technologies, and practices improve software development. But which claims are verifiable, and which are merely wishful thinking? In this book, leading thinkers such as Steve McConnell, Barry Boehm, and Barbara Kitchenham offer essays that uncover the truth and unmask myths commonly held among the software development community. Their insights may surprise you. Are some programmers really ten times more productive than others? Does writing tests first help you develop better code faster? Can code metrics predict the number of bugs in a piece of software? Do design patterns actually make better software? What effect does personality have on pair programming? What matters more: how far apart people are geographically, or how far apart they are in the org chart? Contributors include: Jorge Aranda Tom Ball Victor R. Trade and Investment Rule-making

Trade and Investment Rule-making

$36

Regional trade agreements are playing a greater role in shaping trade and investment rules around the world. To date the study of preferential agreements has focused on their impact on tariff preferences, but as tariffs are reduced rule-making becomes more important in trade and investment. This book addresses the role of regional and bilateral agreements in rule-making; provides an analytical framework for assessing the impact of regional and other preferential agreements on rule-making; and illustrates the role of regional agreements in a multi-level process of rule-making. Seven detailed case studies show that regional agreements can make a positive contribution to the evolution of predictable trade and investment rules, but much depends on the kind of rules they promote. To date regional rule-making has gone hand-in-hand with the evolution of multilateral rules, but recent developments give some pause for thought. It is important to understand more fully the interaction between the regional and other levels of rule-making, if the positive aspects are to be furthered and negative aspects contained.

Policy-Making in Education

Policy-Making in Education

$26.95

This book is based on the notion that an adequate response to globalization challenges requires a holistic approach to several different dimensions – immigration, technology, economy, and environment – as well as effective collaboration and coordination among the central domains of education: curriculum, teaching, and teacher education. Several cases of policy-making are presented in order to elicit common features as guidelines for the holistic policy-making model proposed in this book. First, this central framework views the different dimensions of globalization as requiring connection and integration. Second, the proposed approach asserts that three major aspects of education that are vital for policy in education – curriculum, teaching, and teachereducation – must also be integrated. Finally, the process of policy-making is perceived as requiring close interaction and coordination between diverse stakeholders and representatives of the different aspects of globalization. The book presents a conceptual model for policy-making, as well as details of operational steps in this process.

Religion and the Book in Early Modern England: The Making of John Foxe's 'Book of Martyrs'

Religion and the Book in Early Modern England: The Making of John Foxe’s ‘Book of Martyrs’

$83.98

John Foxe’s Acts and Monuments – popularly known as the ‘Book of Martyrs’ – is a milestone in the history of the English book. An essential history of the English Reformation and a seminal product of it, no English book before it had been as long or as lavishly illustrated. Examining the research behind the work and also its financing, printing and dissemination, Elizabeth Evenden and Thomas S. Freeman argue that, apart from Foxe’s zeal and industry, the book was only made possible by extensive cooperation between its printer, John Day, and the Elizabethan government. Government patronage, rather than market forces, lay behind the book’s success and ensured the triumph of a Protestant interpretation of the Reformation for centuries to come. Based on little-used manuscript sources, this book offers a unique insight not only into the ‘Book of Martyrs’ and the history of the English book, but into English history itself.

The Consequences of Decision-Making

The Consequences of Decision-Making

$75

Decision-making is one of the defining characteristics of modern organizations. This book collects together the most important writing on decision-making by Brunsson, one of the leading European organizational theorists. The author provides an introduction to this work, brought together for the first time in this volume. – ;Nils Brunsson is one of the leading European organization theorists who has written and researched decision-making in organizations. He has often questioned the rationality of decision-making, and argued that it is as important to understand other consequences of decision-making apart from choice – such things as mobilizing action, allocating responsibility, and legitimizing organizations. These consequences of decisions can influence decision-making and the assumptions about feasible norms that provide their context. Decisions often run counter to actions and are part of what Brunsson calls organizational hypocrisy. Decisions can substitute for action, or decrease the probability of the action they call for. The norm of rationality is far from obvious: sometimes decision-makers can recommend systematic irrationality. This book collects together a wide-range of Nils Brunsson's most important writing on decision-making, brought together in one volume for the first time, with an introduction from the author. -

Decision-Making, Personhood and Dementia

Decision-Making, Personhood and Dementia

$34.95

Dementia is a devastating disorder which may dramatically interfere with decision-making abilities. Effort has focused on trying to determine when a person is no longer capable of making particular decisions or is globally incompetent. However, much less focus has been placed on understanding how the capacity to make decisions influences one's view of oneself, one's world and one's treatment by others. This book aims to broaden discussion around this issue by moving beyond a focus on notions of capability and competence to explore the importance of personhood and the underlying complexities of decision-making for those with dementia. Based on papers from the Centre for Research on Personhood in Dementia (CRPD) workshop, experts in dementia care, law, ethics and philosophy discuss the interface between dementia, personhood and decision-making. Drawing on a wide range of interdisciplinary and international perspectives, the book forges new understandings of relationships between everyday, informal decision-making and more formal biomedical or legal processes for assessing competence. This collection of papers provides an in-depth understanding of decision-making in relation to dementia for researchers, healthcare practitioners, service providers, legal professionals and anyone with an interest in personhood in dementia care.

State Making in Asia

State Making in Asia

$43.79

Including contributions from an international team of leading experts, this volume examines state making from a uniquely Asian perspective and reveals some of the misunderstandings that arise when states and state making are judged solely on the basis of Western history. Presenting new empirical and conceptual material based on original research, the book provides a unique theoretical reflection of the state through a thorough comparison of East Asian nations and, as such, will be a valuable resource to scholars of Asian politics and international relations.
